Myofascial Pain Syndrome

Myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) is a chronic condition that refers to pain and inflammation in the body’s soft tissues. It affects the connective tissue covering the muscles (fascia) of a single or group of muscles. MPS is often characterized by trigger points, local tender nodules in any muscle, and referred pain, pain that is located away from the site of injury. A muscle injury or excessive strain may cause MPS, however emotional, postural and behavioral factors may contribute to the pain.

Treatment can involve gentle stretching and exercise to recover range of motion and increase strength. Myofascial release, massage and acupuncture can be used to decrease pain while posture evaluation and ergonomics can be used to prevent further injuries and flare-ups.
